A RARE WW2 AIR MINISTRY NAVIGATORS ANGLEPOISE LAMP (5C/1079) USED IN AIRCRAFT LIKE THE WELLINGTON BOMBER AND VARSITY TRAINER BUT THE MOST WIDESPREAD USE WAS IN THE LANCASTER. THE LAMP IS MADE FROM SUPER LIGHT ALUMINIUM AND OTHER NON-MAGNETIC MATERIALS AND THE PIVOT POINTS WERE FITTED WITH FRICTION DISCS WHICH CAN BE ADJUSTED TO PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT.
During the Second World War production of the 1227 was hugely reduced. Like all U.K. manufacturers Herbert Terry and Sons England switched mainly over to ‘war work’. Anglepoise’s were still produced though not for the domestic market…but for bombers. The design was ideal for Navigators chart tables, so a modified version of the 1227 was produced for the air ministry.
This lamp is an early one ! The ‘V’ section at the bottom is very different to later models, being made of three parts rather than the later single castings,so this dates this lamp from 1935 ..so rare !
